NYC with Kids

We love to travel with our kids. We are not the people to put off all that we want to do until they’re older, or until X,Y,Z. We want to do it all now and show them the world–give them experiences as gifts as much as we can. We only have 18 years worth of family trips, give or take, and we believe in making the most of that time.

We go Up North (to Northern Michigan for all the non-MI native readers) a ton during the year, but our family makes it a point to do at least one other big city/place each year and every other year do Europe.

This past May, we went to New York City. My daughter H is enamored with cities and forests equally. Her take on New York: “it’s so fun with a lot of cool stuff to do everywhere and lots of PARKS.” My smallest F is a seasoned traveler as well and while he likes the fun things to do, he also equally likes it at home.

We have been traveling with our kids since they were 4 months old and since 2015, we have learned a LOT of things about what travel tips work, what doesn’t and what to avoid.

I’ve found that the right mix of gear, attitudes and a good list of kid-friendly activities with a lot of parks mixed in and extra local snacks wins over their hearts every time.

Without further ado, our top spots for NYC with kids. Happy Travels!

NYC with Kids: 2019 Edition Top Spots

  • Central Park Zoo: Zoos make me sad. I said it. I know, I know, some are conservancies, etc. etc. but I really don’t like going. That said, this zoo didn’t bum me out too bad and it’s the perfect size for kids under 6 or so. Not too big, so you can see it all and it’s in a perfect location that’s easy to get to from most spots in Manhattan. The kids loved the sea lion show!

  • Frozen on Broadway: Seeing Frozen on Broadway was definitely a Peak Experience for H and fun for the adults too. It was such a spectacular show and it’s now touring in North America-don’t miss it! It’s SO worth the trip (and the price tag).

  • Emack & Bolio’s: OH. This ice cream. A surefire hit with both kids and adults. It’s truly to die for. The best ice cream this side of Paris. Worth the line and the trip!

  • Riverside Park: Dinosaur Playground: The kids loved the dinosaurs and we loved getting off the Central Park park circuit. Much less busy and a bit off the beaten path a bit. A true neighborhood park.

  • Rudin Family Playground: This Upper West Side Central Park playground was fabulous. It’s full shade-and as any parent knows this is key for both kids and parents. Why are ALL playgrounds in blazing sun? A must for those hot summer days!

  • Absolute Bagels: I love, love local food. I also love never needing a car (for the most part) in NYC and this spot was within walking distance of our Airbnb and had some of the best bagels I’ve ever had. They also have mini kid bagels! A must! (no website, 2788 Broadway, New York, NY 10025)

  • Plowshares Coffee: Coffee for grownups at all hours of the day for all the miles walked and GF donuts that are a dream. The kids loved their pastries, all made from scratch!

  • Bank Street Books: THIS PLACE. Last but certainly not least, this place is incredible. A corner bookstore that exclusively sells children’s books. A giant selection of books with a helpful and very knowledgable staff,–this place is so amazing. For a huge bookworm like myself and for my kids who are equally obsessed this store was heaven! <UPDATE, COVID hit hard and unfortunately Bank Street is now closed. RIP.>
